The landmark can be seen for miles around the county, known more for its farms than its towns. 'I never really worried about it much,' says Bert. 'The wind blows the other way.'

When patients are first brought to Anbaham Home for Mentally Ill Orphans in Chennai, India, they are shaved of all their body hair for sanitary reasons. Potential patients are identified on the streets by Anbaham staff, evaluated for mental illness, and brought to the home in hopes of finding their families.
