Elizabeth Cheng Krist graduated from Princeton University and worked at Asia and Fortune before coming to National Geographic in 1994. Elizabeth has won a first place in editing from the Pictures of the Year International competition and several Communication Arts citations. She has judged competitions for Kodak, Nikon, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards. She has curated exhibitions in Arlington, Va., and Athens, Greece, and taught at the Santa Fe Workshops.

Based in Mexico City, Janet Jarman focuses on divisive social issues of our time, such as immigration and the effects of globalization. She is known for her award-winning projects on the global coffee crisis, immigration and the lives of migrant families. Jarman has worked recently for publications such as Geo, Smithsonian, The New York Times, Newsweek and TimeAsia. She is recognized for her innovative work combining still photography and audio, creating multimedia projects for MSNBC.com and NYTimes.com.

Torsten Kjellstrand works as a staff photojournalist at in Portland, Ore. Previously, he worked for two much smaller newspapers, The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Wash., and at The Herald, in Jasper, Ind. Two years ago, the whole family lived for a year in Palo Alto while Torsten was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University. Torsten was the 53rd Newspaper Photographer of the Year while on a staff of two working with John Rumbach at The Herald.

Joe Weiss has worked as a photojournalist, multimedia reporter, designer, programmer, producer and editor in print and online media since 1996. He is currently a freelance interactive producer and the developer of Soundslides, a multimedia authoring application for journalists. Previously, he was an interactive producer at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., the director of photography at The Herald-Sun in Durham, N.C., and worked for MSNBC.com as a multimedia producer in Redmond, Wash. His multimedia reports have garnered national and international recognition including an Online Journalism Award from the Online News Association and two Digital Edge awards from the NAA. Most recently his work received a Gold medal in the 2005 Society for News Design's Interactive Design competition.
