Kentucky Street
Young adults in Mt. Sterling, Ky., hang out as they inspect a handgun for possible sale or trade on West Queen Street during an annual October festival. Firearms are commonly sold and traded without proper paperwork at this street festival. Each state has its own gun laws; however, in September of 2004, the assault weapons ban expired and was not renewed by Congress and the president.

Because of their religious beliefs, the Amish do not participate in governmental assistance programs, therefore they have modest school houses and usually only study in a strictly all-Amish school.

Jessi
Defying a Boy's Club Jessi McCoy is training to become a pro boxer. After discovering boxing and Sam’s Gym when she came to Athens as a student at Ohio University five years ago. After graduation, the sport became her life. Sam, the owner of Sam’s Gym, is her coach. During her training nights, she is most often the only female in the gym, leaving her no choice but to spar with the men.

Being extremely tough and determined, the men at the gym respect Jessi and usually treat her like one of them, allowing no mercy during a training fight; and new boxers, as well as veterans, will heed her advice on improving a technique.

Warm Up
During fights, Jessi is forced to use the men’s locker room, since she and her opponent are usually the only women competing. Though she changes in the women’s bathroom, she must keep her belongings and warm up before the fight in the locker room with the men.

The Fight
After weeks of training with men, Jessi is able to participate in a fight with another female. During the Trimble Middle School “Boxing for Books� Fight Night, Jessi and her opponent, Valerie, were the only females to fight all night; the rest were males ranging from young boys to retired pro men boxers.
