58th Annual College Photographer of the Year Competition

58 CPOY : Call For Entries : Contest Categories

SINGLE PICTURE CATEGORIES

01. Spot News - A picture of an unscheduled event for which no advance planning was possible. Ex: fires, accidents or natural disasters.

02. General News - A picture of a scheduled political, social or cultural event for which advance planning was possible. Examples: demonstrations, staged entertainment and promotional events.

03. Feature - Usually a “found” situation with strong human interest.  Should be unposed and should celebrate life. Respect for the dignity of the subject is important.

04. Sports Action - An action photograph that captures the competitive spirit. Should increase understanding of and appreciation for individual and team sports.

05. Sports Feature - An unposed sports-related picture with strong human interest. Should celebrate the role athletics play in the lives of athletes and fans.

06. Portrait - A picture of a person that reveals the essence of the subject’s character.

07. Pictorial - A graphic image: composition, tonal or color qualities are as important as subject matter. Sometimes of places but may include people.

08. Illustration* - A food, product, still life, fashion or concept picture. Each entry must have a title.

09. Personal Vision* - A photograph that showcases a photographer's unique perspective on the world. May be an abstraction, a construction or other non-traditional photograph.

*If you used digital manipulation to create your image, please indicate so in your captions.

MULTIPLE PICTURE CATEGORIES**

10. Picture Story - A series of pictures of a subject that together provide an overall understanding of the subject. May be news, feature or sports. Eight pictures maximum per story.

11. Sports Portfolio - Demonstrate versatility. Submit a maximum of eight action and feature photographs that include at least three different sports. No stories.

12. Documentary - A photographic essay or extended story.  Entries in this category should portray contemporary concerns, such as rights of the underprivileged, racism, gender equality, ecological dangers or other topics of similar importance. For this category only: To encourage long-term projects, pictures may be from previous years’ work. But, half of the pictures must have been taken, or first published, between September 1, 2002, and September 1, 2003. Maximum 15 photos.

13. Portfolio - A portfolio must include at least one multiple picture entry (picture story, sports portfolio or documentary) as well as entries that represent at least four of the single categories. 15 entries (50 images) maximum.

14. On-line or Multimedia Photo Story or Essay - A story or essay that is meant to be viewed on the Internet or on a CD-ROM. The photography, sound collection, editing AND creation of the web site or multimedia project MUST be entirely the work of the entering photographer. No more than one story per entry. Cannot be part of a portfolio.

**All multiple picture entries must include a story summary.
