Syrian refugees, Bulgaria
Thousands of men, women and children, particularly from Syria, entered Bulgaria through the Turkish border in the last three months of 2013. Being the poorest country in the European Union, Bulgaria struggles to cope with the new streams of refugees. One of them is a 48-year old Syrian man who has been carried out in front of the refugee facility in Pastrogor in hope for an ambulance. The man has been throwing up blood, and while lying on the cold ground, one of the other refugees starts to rub him on the chest. He whispers a quiet prayer, believing he will die. The man survives the episode. Around 10.000 migrants (one-thirds of them from Syria) entered Bulgaria during 2013. 11.000 asylum seekers are expected to reach Bulgaria by the end of 2014.

"The kid who said he was his brother was picking up cash while I'm holding his brothers hand while he's lying in a puddle of water" said Vincent David Johnson. Two teen boys were shot in front of the house where Johnson lives, one fatally. Johnson said he was about to go to bed when he heard what he thought was a tree branch cracking in the thunderstorm, but were actually gunshots. Johnson said he went outside to see two boys shot, one lying in the street unable to speak, gasping on the pavement. Johnson said he then called 911, and held the boys hand before he died. The boy was 17-years-old and died there in the street, and the other was a 15-year-old and was taken to the hospital. The shooting took place in the 600 block of East 50th Place on June 30, 2014.
